While Utah may have the ‘Greatest Snow on Earth,’ heavy snowfall and ice accumulating on your roof can cause several problems for you and your home. Roof Heat Cable Installation

Heating cables should be installed by experienced roofing contractors to ensure they are done correctly. Otherwise, you still risk damage to your roof or injury to loved ones if the cables fail due to improper installation. What Are Heating Cables?

A heat cable for a roof is an electrical wire that can be heated up during snowfall to prevent snow and ice from accumulating on the edges of your roof.

Different Types of Heat Cables

You can get two types of heating cables for your roof: self-regulating and constant wattage.

Self-regulating heat cables produce heat based on the temperature around them. This means that if one section is warmer than another, the first section of the cable won’t heat up as much as the cooler section because it doesn’t need to.

On the other hand, constant-wattage heating cables produce consistent, stable heat throughout the entire cable to ensure it is equally distributed along the line.

During your roof heat cable installation in Salt Lake City, our team can help you decide which type of heating cable is best for your home and needs.

Benefits of Heat Cables

There are several benefits of adding a heat cable to your roof. Heat cables are installed in a zigzag pattern throughout the lower colder section of the roof to prevent the water from freezing and leading to further issues. One of the main benefits of doing roof heat cable installation in Salt Lake City is listed below.

How Heat Cables Prevent Ice Dams and Protect the Home

The part of your roof that extends out from the edge is typically colder than the rest of the roof. This means that when the upper section warms up due to your home heating system, snow will melt and run down toward the cooler area by your gutters. Once this water hits the colder section, it can refreeze, causing problems with frozen pipes, water damage, and even ice dams.

Preventing Ice Dams and Damage to Roofing Systems

If there are several days worth of snow melting and refreezing on your roof, it can slowly build up into an ice dam. This blockage is problematic, as the ice buildup can get under shingles and push them up, which ruins the shingles and allows water to get under them and into your attic space.

Using heating cables to prevent ice dams is helpful because it only targets the problematic areas, so you won’t have to worry about heating your entire roof or the extra associated costs. Additionally, ice dams contribute to icicles, which are injury hazards for you and your loved ones. So getting heat cables for your roof also helps keep you safer during the winter months.

They were great with communicating, scheduling was easy. They sent reminders and were on time. The work was good and prices competitive. At first I gave them 4 stars and I was unhappy with the mess of screws and metal pieces left around the yard. After discussion with owner they have arranged to clean up. I would recommend doing a walk around with crew before they leave the worksite.

We had our rain gutters came unattached from our roof. After a couple big storms, the sun came out and we had our entire rooftop of snow coming down in one place. M&M came out while it was raining and snow was melting causing a major downpour. They did a temporary repair to save us from flooding...reshaping our rain gutter and reattaching it to the home. They followed up and had someone come to give us an estimate and he did some minor repairs right then so we wouldn't be charged again. I couldn't be more pleased: kind, thoughtful, professional and reasonably priced!!

The initial estimate process took a little longer than expected due to them rescheduling, then another person showing up the next week, but once someone came out to look at the job I got the estimate quickly. It was a super small job, but the guy who did the install did a good job and was very friendly. I would use them again if needed.

I had several neighbors recommend M&M and they were great! They answered the phone right away, scheduled my appointment quickly, the cleaner was on time and polite. They gave me a free bid as to the cost and no pressure to use them. I did use them and am glad that I did.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roof Heating Cables

How long does heat tape last?

Heat tape is another name for heat cables for a roof. These cables can last between 3 and 5 years before needing to be replaced.

Can I leave my heat tape plugged in?

Some heating cables can stay plugged in at all times because they are designed to, but you’ll need to check your manufacturer’s directions to be sure. If the directions do not indicate that the cable can be continuously plugged in, you should only plug it in when temperatures drop below a specific point.

Why do I need heat tape for my home?

Winters in Utah can be harsh, and we’ve had record-breaking snowfall in the past few years. Adding heating cables to your roof helps prevent snow and ice buildup and reduces the risk of potential injuries.
